A Trip to Italy – Part 1
Hello, and welcome to English for Spanish Speakers. My name is Frank, and I want to tell you a little about a recent trip that my family and I took. Toward the beginning of June I, my wife, and my two daughters spent 10 days in Italy.
We left on a Thursday from Newark Airport. Naturally we had to arrive at the airport two hours early in order to check our baggage and go through security. There was a long line at check-in, but it moved fairly quickly, and in about 10 or 15 minutes after our arrival at the airport we had checked our luggage and had our boarding passes. Next we had to go through security.
Not many years ago security was a simple walk through a metal detector, but things have changed dramatically in this post 9/11 world. In addition to removing our shoes, and putting all bags and other carry-on articles in trays that were to pass through an x-ray machine, we had to have all liquids in small bottles, and visible in a see-through plastic bag. It took us another 20 minutes or so to get through security.
Once through security, we waited near the boarding gate for our flight to be called. They boarded the flight by sections, and ours was one of the last sections to be boarded.
Once on the plane the flight was reasonably comfortable. I am very tall, six foot four and a half inches, so I find most airplane seats very constrictive. When I travel for business I typically travel “business class,” where the seats provide much more room; however, for vacation we were traveling tourist class. The flight lasted about 7 hours and unfortunately I wasn’t able to sleep.
We left Newark about 7:00 p.m. in the evening, and arrived in Italy about 8:00 a.m. in the morning. There is a 6 hour time difference between New Jersey and Italy, and the plane flight is about 7 hours. We landed in Rome along with many other flights full of tourists. It seems as though we waited forever to get our luggage. Finally the luggage did arrive, and none of it had been lost. It always makes for a bad start to any trip to be missing a piece of luggage, but we were fortunate. We took a train from the airport to the city, and then at the train station caught a taxi to take us to the hotel.
One of the problems of flying from the east coast of the US to Europe is that all of the flights leave in the evening and arrive early the next day. That almost invariably means that your hotel room will not be available until several hours after you arrive. Such was the case with our rooms, so we walked around Rome for several hours until we could get into our room.

Un Viaje a Italia – Primera Parte
Hola y bienvenido a Inglés Para Hispanohablantes. Me llamo Frank y quiero contarte un poco sobre un viaje reciente que tomamos mi familia y yo. A principios de Junio, yo, mi esposa y mis dos hijas pasamos 10 días en Italia.
Salimos un jueves del aeropuerto de Newark. Naturalmente, tuvimos que llegar al aeropuerto dos horas antes de la hora de salida para facturar nuestro equipaje y pasar por seguridad. Hubo una cola muy larga, pero no tuvimos que esperar mucho, y aproximadamente 10 o 15 minutos después de nuestra llegada al aeropuerto, habíamos facturado nuestras maletas y habíamos recibido nuestros permisos de abordar. Después, tuvimos que pasar por seguridad.
Hace pocos años, pasar por seguridad era nada mas que pasar por un detector de metales, pero desde el 11 de septiembre del 2001 el mundo ha cambiado. Además de quitarnos los zapatos y meter en las bandejas de seguridad todo lo que llevábamos, para que pudieran pasar por el equipo de rayos X, tuvimos que llevar todos líquidos en botellas pequeñas dentro de una bolsita transparente. Nos tardamos 20 minutos mas en seguridad.
Después de pasar por seguridad, esperamos hasta que anunciaron nuestro vuelo. Embarcamos en orden de fila de asiento, y fuimos los últimos pasajeros en abordar.
Después de haber embarcado, el vuelo fue razonablemente cómodo. Soy muy alto, 194 cm, y me parece que la mayoría de los asientos en aviones son muy constrictivos. Cuando hago un viaje de negocios generalmente vuelo en clase de negocios, en la cual hay asientos mucho más cómodos, pero en vacaciones volamos en clase turista. El vuelo duró 7 horas y por desgracia no pude dormir.
Salimos de Newark a las 7:00 de la noche y llegamos a Italia a las 8:00 de la mañana. Hay una diferencia de 6 horas entre Nueva Jersey e Italia y el vuelo dura casi 7 horas. Aterrizamos en Roma junto con muchos otros vuelos llenos de turistas. Nos pareció que esperamos la llegada de nuestro equipaje para siempre. Por fin llegó nuestro equipaje y no nos faltaba ni una maleta. Faltar de una maleta es siempre un mal comienzo de un viaje, pero tuvimos suerte. Tomamos un tren del aeropuerto a la ciudad, y después tomamos un taxi de la estación del tren hasta el hotel.
Cuando se vuela de la costa este de los Estados Unidos a Europa, todos los vuelos salen en la noche y llegan en la madrugada del día siguiente. Esto significa que casi invariablemente la habitación del hotel no estará lista antes de algunas horas después de tu llegada. Eso es lo que nos pasó, por lo tanto nos paseamos por Roma hasta que pudiéramos entrar a nuestras habitaciones.
