Football in the United States

Hello and welcome to English for Spanish Speakers. My name is Frank and I have had a special request from some sports fans in Zamora, Spain to talk about our American football teams, and how they are organized. Not being much of a sports fan, I’m probably one of the least qualified persons to do this; however, I have done some research, and I think that I’ve finally gotten my act together.

American football, as I’m sure all of my listeners know, is very different from what the rest of the world calls football, and what we in the United States call soccer. Professional football in the United States is controlled and regulated by the National Football League, or as it is more commonly known, the NFL. In addition to professional football, there is a wildly popular college football league, but a discussion of college football will have to wait for another podcast.

The NFL is divided into two conferences: the American Football Conference and the National Football Conference. Each conference is divided into four divisions: East, West, North, and South. Each division has four teams, and each team has 53 players. The NFL regular season begins in September and runs into December. Each team plays 16 games during its regular season. After the regular season ends, six teams from each conference begin the playoffs. The six teams in each conference that are in the playoffs are the respective winners of each division plus two wild-card-teams. The two wild-card-teams are the teams in the conference with the best winning record, but which did not win a division title.

The playoffs begin in January, and the winner of each conference meet at the end of February to play in the Super Bowl. One week after the Super Bowl there is the Pro Bowl. The Pro Bowl has a selection of the best players from each conference who play each other; however, the Pro Bowl does not have nearly the prestige that the Super Bowl has.

Football is a very male-oriented game. To the best of my knowledge there are no professional or college teams with female players; however, I have heard of high-school teams with female players. It is probably one of the rougher sports played in the United States, and it is infamous for the number of injuries it routinely produces.

Saturday afternoons are typical days to see college football on TV, and Sunday afternoons are the typical days to see professional football. However, much to the chagrin of many a football widow, in 1970 the NFL began the tradition of Monday-night-football on TV, and it immediately proved immensely popular. Today football fans are glued to their screens on Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays during the regular season and the playoffs.

The Super Bowl has become more than just a contest between two teams. It has turned into a national party. The Sunday in February on which the Super Bowl is played has acquired the nickname of “Super Sunday.” Millions of American families invite friends to Super Bowl parties where principally the men watch the football, and the women gather to talk. (I know that many women are dedicated sports fans; however, in the United States, one finds comparatively few women who have much interest in football.) The parties include much food along with rivers of beer and other beverages. They often last many hours beyond the finish of the Super Bowl.

Fútbol en los Estados Unidos

Hola y bienvenido a Inglés Para Hispanohablantes. Me llamo Frank y recibí una petición especial de Zamora, España para hablar sobre las ligas de fútbol americano, y como se organizan. No soy muy aficionado a los deportes y probablemente soy uno de los más incompetentes para discutir este tema. No obstante, he investigado el tema y creo que, por fin, estoy bien preparado.

Fútbol profesional en los Estados Unidos está controlado y regulado por la Liga Nacional de Fútbol, o como es más conocida, el NFL (por sus siglas en inglés). Además hay una liga universitaria que es muy popular, pero una discusión de fútbol universitario tendrá que esperar a otro podcast.

El NFL está dividido en dos conferencias: la Conferencia de Fútbol Americano y la Conferencia de Fútbol Nacional. Cada conferencia está dividida en cuatro divisiones: División del Este, División del Oeste, División del Norte y División del Sur. Cada división esta compuesta de cuatro equipos y cada equipo tiene 53 jugadores. La temporada regular del NFL empieza en septiembre y corre hasta fines de diciembre. Cada equipo juega 16 partidos en la temporada regular. Después de que termina la temporada regular, seis equipos de cada conferencia juegan en las eliminatorias. Los seis equipos en cada conferencia que juegan en las eliminatorias son los ganadores de cada división mas dos equipos comodines. Los dos equipos comodines son los equipos en la conferencia con las mejores clasificaciones que no ganaron una eliminatoria divisional.

Las eliminatorias empiezan en enero y el ganador de cada conferencia juega en la Super Copa (Super Bowl) a fines de febrero. Una semana después de la Super Copa hay la Copa de las Estrellas (Pro Bowl). La Copa de las Estrellas está compuesta de los mejores jugadores en cada conferencia. No obstante, la Copa de Estrellas no tiene el renombre de la Super Copa.

Fútbol americano es un juego muy macho. Que sepa yo, no hay equipos profesionales ni equipos universitarios con jugadoras, sin embargo, sé de equipos en los bachilleratos con jugadoras. Probablemente es uno de los deportes más violentos en los Estados Unidos y tiene la mala reputación de producir muchos heridos.

Sábados en las tardes son los días típicos para ver los partidos de los equipos universitarios en la tele y domingos en las tardes son los días típicos para ver los partidos de los equipos profesionales en la tele. No obstante, desafortunadamente, del punto de vista de las “viudas de fútbol,” en 1970 el NFL empezó la tradición de fútbol en las noches de los lunes en la tele, e inmediatamente se puso muy popular. Hoy en día los aficionados al fútbol están pegados a las teles los sábados, domingos, y lunes durante la temporada regular y las eliminatorias.

La Super Copa se ha vuelto más que simplemente un partido entre dos equipos. Se ha vuelto una fiesta nacional. El domingo en febrero en que juegan la Super Copa ha adquirido el apodo “Super Domingo.” Millones de familias americanas invitan a amigos a “fiestas de Super Copa” en la que los hombres ven el partido de fútbol y las mujeres se reúnen para charlar. (Yo sé que muchas mujeres son muy aficionadas a los deportes, sin embargo, en los Estados Unidos, uno encuentra a pocas mujeres que tienen mucho interés en fútbol americano.) Las fiestas tienen mucha comida y mucha cerveza y otras bebidas. Frecuentemente terminan muchas horas después del fin del partido.
