My Town
Hello, and welcome once again to English for Spanish Speakers. My name is Frank and today I want to talk a little bit about the town in which I live—Mountainside, New Jersey.
Any of you who are interested can go to Google Maps http://maps.google.com/maps and find a map to show where Mountainside is located. It is about 20 miles (32 kilometers) west of New York City. The population is a little under 7,000 people and the total area is about 4.1 square miles (10.5 square kilometers). There are approximately 2,500 households, and about 72% of the households consist of married couples.
We have two schools in our town, and they serve children from 5 years old to 14 years old. We say our school system is K thru 8. That stands for kindergarten through eighth grade. After eighth grade, the children attend a regional high school that provides four more years of education. A regional high school is one that is shared by one or more towns. After high school, the young people either directly enter the workforce, attend some sort of technical training, or go onto a college or university.
Unlike many towns in Europe or Latin America where there are many miles between adjacent towns, in my section of New Jersey, where one town ends the next town begins. It is often very difficult for a visitor to tell which town he is in, and I myself am often not sure where the borders of Mountainside end, and where the borders of the next town begin.
Mountainside is often referred to as a “bedroom community.” This is an American term, and refers to towns that are suburbs of large cities. Mountainside is a suburb of New York City. Many of the inhabitants of Mountainside commute into New York City each day, and then return in the evening to eat with their families and to sleep. The term “bedroom community” derives from the fact that many people do little more than sleep in the community. They work and shop somewhere else. However, this is an exaggeration. There are a lot of small businesses in town, and people work in many places other than New York City. Still, New York City is the economic hub of the region, and you still hear the term “bedroom community” used to describe many towns in the region.
Most of the dwellings in Mountainside are single family homes. There are very few apartments, and very few, if any, multifamily homes. Virtually all of the houses have lawns and gardens. Unlike an urban setting, such as New York City, where there is an abundance of public transportation, Mountainside has very little public transportation. If you live in Mountainside, and don’t own a car, you will find life very inconvenient.
Deer are a major pest in Mountainside. There is a very large park in the town where hundreds of deer live. Because there are no natural predators in the park, such as wolves, the deer multiply and wander into gardens where they eat all of the flowering plants, and many other types of plants. Normally once a year, the local government arranges for hunters to come and shoot a certain number of deer in order to keep the size of the herd under control. Still, they are a nuisance for everybody with a garden, and are a hazard on the roads around town. This is especially the case in the evening, or at night, when the deer are almost impossible to see until it is too late to avoid a collision.
Most of the businesses in town are small businesses such as insurance agencies, food stores, clothing stores, etc. There are branches of some large banks and branches of some other large companies. We have a library which many people use, and we have a large movie theatre which is very popular, especially on weekends. There are several restaurants in Mountainside, and many, many more within a very short drive.
Mountainside and the surrounding towns have no discotheques, night clubs, or other traditional gathering spots of young people. To find such places people have to go to a large city in New Jersey, such as Newark, or go into New York City. Likewise if you want museums, orchestras, theatre, and similar types of entertainment, you must go into New York City, or perhaps to one of the larger New Jersey cities. That is why Mountainside is much more popular with people with young families, or with older people, than it is with young single people who are looking for places to hang out and meet other young single people.
Still, I and my wife have lived in Mountainside for over 20 years now, and we continue to like it. My children have grown, and moved away to areas more popular with young single people; however, they frequently come home to visit and still think fondly about Mountainside.

Si estás interesado en saber donde está situado mi pueblo, puedes consultar el sitio Google Maps http://maps.google.com/maps y buscar un mapa que demuestre la ubicación. Está a unas veinte millas (32 kilómetros) al poniente de la ciudad de Nueva York. Tiene una población de 7,000 personas, y tiene un área de 4.1 millas cuadradas (10.5 kilómetros cuadrados). Hay unos 2,500 hogares, y en el 72% de los hogares se encuentran parejas casadas.
Tenemos dos escuelas en nuestro pueblo, y esas escuelas sirven niños de 5 años hasta 14 años. Digamos que nuestro distrito escolar es K hasta 8. K-8 significa jardín de infancia hasta grado escolar 8. Después de grado escolar 8, los niños acuden a un bachillerato (preparatoria) regional. Un bachillerato regional es una escuela que comparten dos o más pueblos. Después del bachillerato los jóvenes empiezan a trabajar, asisten a una escuela politécnica, o acuden a la universidad u otro tipo de escuela.
Muchas veces en Europa o en América Latina hay muchos kilómetros entre los pueblos. En mi región de Nueva Jersey, la frontera de un pueblo colinda con la frontera del próximo pueblo—no hay distancia entre los pueblos. Frecuentemente es difícil para un visitante saber en que pueblo está, y frecuentemente yo mismo no estoy seguro donde quedan las colindancias de los pueblos vecinos.
A menudo gente le denomina a Mountainside “una comunidad de dormitorios.” Es un término Americano, y significa un pueblo que es un barrio residencial periférico. Mountainside está en las afueras de la ciudad de Nueva York. Por lo que Mountainside es más popular con la gente que tiene niños y con viejos, que con jóvenes solteros que buscan lugares para encontrar y reunirse con otros jóvenes solteros.
No obstante, mi esposa y yo hemos vivido en Mountainside más de 20 años y todavía nos gusta el pueblo. Mis hijas ya son adultas y se mudaron a lugares más populares con jóvenes; pero nos visitan frecuentemente y le tienen mucho cariño a Mountainside.
