Basketball in the USHello, and welcome to English for Spanish speakers. My name is Frank. I know that there are a number of sports fans in Zamora, Spain who are studying English, so I thought I would talk a little bit about how professional basketball is organized in the United States. Right now in the US we’re in the football season, but basketball season will be beginning shortly.
The organization which controls professional basketball in the US is the National Basketball Association, or as it is more commonly known, the NBA. There are currently 30 teams in the NBA. 29 of them are in the United States, and one, the Toronto Raptors, is from Canada. The teams are divided into two conferences: the Eastern Conference, and the Western Conference. Each conference has three divisions. In the Eastern Conference are the Atlantic, Central, and Southeast divisions. In the Western Conference are the Southwest, Northwest, and Pacific divisions. There are five teams in each division.

During the regular season each team plays 82 games. A team plays other teams in its own division four times in the regular season (two home, and two away games). It plays other teams in its conference (the other two divisions) three or four times per season. Finally, it plays each team in the other conference twice per season.
The regular season begins in November and ends in April. The playoffs begin towards the end of April. Eight teams from each conference qualify for the playoffs. The three division winners, along with the next best performing team receive the top four seeds. The next four best teams are given the following four seeds. The better one’s seed the better one’s advantage. The first seed team begins the playoffs by playing the eighth seed team. The second seed team plays the seventh seed team, etc. Using another complicated formula, teams with better seeds receive home-court advantage. Each team plays an opponent in a best of seven series, which is to say, the first team to win four games wins that series. The playoffs continue until there remains one winner in each conference. The winners of their respective conferences move on to the NBA Finals. The Finals also consists of a “best-of-seven” series, where the first team to win four games wins the Finals.
In February of each year, there is a pause in the regular season for the NBA All-Star Game. Basketball fans throughout the US and Canada vote for their favorite players. The players who get the most points in each position get a place on the team and coaches get to choose the remaining players. Then the stars of the Western Conference play against the stars of the Eastern Conference. One player during the All-Star game is voted MVP, or Most Valuable Player.
In addition to the NBA there is a WNBA, or Women’s National Basketball Association in the US, which was formed in 1996. There are currently seven teams in the Eastern Conference and seven teams in the Western conference. Each team plays 34 games during the regular season, which begins in May, and ends in late August. The WBNA playoffs begin during the first part of September, and the finals are played during the last part of September.

Baloncesto en los Estados Unidos
Hola, y bienvenido a Inglés Para Hispanohablantes. Me llamo Frank. Ya sé que hay muchos aficionados a los deportes en Zamora, España que estudian inglés, por lo tanto, decidí hablar un poco sobre como se organiza el baloncesto profesional en los Estados Unidos. Hoy día en los EEUU es la temporada de fútbol, pero pronto empezará la temporada de baloncesto.
La organización que controla el baloncesto profesional en los EEUU es la Asociación Nacional de Baloncesto, o como es más conocida, la NBA (por sus siglas en inglés). Hoy día hay 30 equipos en la NBA. 29 están en los Estados Unidos, y uno, los Toronto Raptors, viene de Canadá. Los equipos están divididos en dos conferencias: la Conferencia del Este y la Conferencia del Poniente. Cada conferencia contiene tres divisiones. En la Conferencia del Este hay las divisiones Atlántica, Central, y Sureste. En la Conferencia de Poniente hay las divisiones Suroeste, Noroeste, y Pacífico. Hay cinco equipos en cada división.
Durante la temporada regular cada equipo juega 82 partidos. Un equipo juega contra los otros equipos en su propia división cuatro veces en la temporada regular (dos en casa, dos como visitante). Cada equipo se enfrenta con los otros equipos en su conferencia (las otras divisiones) tres o cuatro veces por temporada. También, juega contra cada equipo en la otra conferencia dos veces por temporada.
La temporada regular empieza en noviembre y termina en abril. Las eliminatorias empiezan a fines de abril. Ocho equipos de cada conferencia obtienen el derecho de jugar en las eliminatorias. El primer clasificado empieza las eliminatorias jugando contra el octavo clasificado. El segundo clasificado juega el séptimo clasificado, etc. Con otra fórmula complicada, los equipos con las clasificaciones mejores, reciben la ventaja de jugar en su cancha de casa. Cada equipo juega contra otro equipo en una serie con un máximo de siete partidos, es decir que el equipo que primero gana cuatro partidos es el ganador de la serie. Las eliminatorias continúan hasta que quede un ganador en cada conferencia. Los ganadores de cada conferencia participan en los Finales del NBA. Los Finales del NBA también están compuestos por una serie en que el equipo que primero gana cuatro partidos gana los Finales.
En febrero de cada año hay una pausa en la temporada regular para el Juego de las Estrellas. Los aficionados al baloncesto votan por los jugadores favoritos. Los jugadores que ganan la mayoría de los votes por cada posición consiguen puestos y los entrenadores eligen a los otros jugadores. Las estrellas de la Conferencia del Poniente se enfrentan con las estrellas de la Conferencia del Este. Un jugador en el partido es nombrado Jugador Más Valioso (MVP por sus siglas in inglés).
Además de NBA hay una Asociación Nacional de Baloncesto Para Mujeres, la WBNA (por sus siglas en inglés) en los Estados Unidos. Fue formada en 1996. Actualmente hay siete equipos en la Conferencia del Este y hay siete equipos en la Conferencia del Poniente. Cada equipo juega 34 partidos durante la temporada regular que empieza en mayo, y termina a fines de agosto. Las eliminatorias del WBNA empiezan el principio de septiembre, y juegan los finales a fines de septiembre.
